How to Create a Seamless Pattern (Photoshop CS5)

In this section we will introduce you how to create a seamless pattern in Photoshop.

The pattern changes depending on arrangements.

We already introduced a seamless pattern in How to Create a Floral Background in Photoshop. In this tutorial, we will create a seamless pattern using existing asymmetric shape patterns.

Step01 Open a New File in Photoshop

Open a new file using the example above.

Step02 Display Ruler

Display rulers. It is convenient when arranging objects [View > Ruler]. Now you have rulers displayed on top and left.

Step03 Display Guide

Display guide so it is easy to see where the midpoint is. To display guide, click [View > New Guide > Numeral Setting]. The overlapping part indicates the midpoint.

Step04 Select an Image for the Pattern

Select an image to be used for the seamless pattern. Select [Custom Shape Tool: Flower 3] and make the flower a similar size to the example above. Arrange the central part of the flower on the midpoint of the guide.

Step05 Copy the Flower Layer

Drag the flower layer to the new file icon and copy the layer.

Step06 Divide the Flower and Place Them

This is the crucial part in creating a seamless pattern.

Divide the flower in four and place each part in corners. Set the numeral using the example above [Filter > Other > Scroll > Rasterize].

Scrolled Image

The flower which was in the middle was divided in four and arranged in the four corners.

Step07 Change the Color of the Central Flower

To change the layer color of the undivided flower, double click the thumbnail and set the color.

Step08 Transform the Shape Layer

In order to save the pattern, you must rasterize the shape layer.

Transform the pattern into a bitmap datum [Right Click > Rasterize Layer]. Since you are not saving the background as a pattern, disable it by clicking the eye icon of the background.

Step09 Save it as a Pattern

Select [Edit > Define Pattern > Input Pattern Name] and the pattern saves.

Done!

Above is the image filled with the saved pattern.

How is it? It doesn’t look tiled as the images are arranged alternately.

The arrangement differs depending on the image. Create your original seamless patterns using various images.
