How to Create a Mirror Ball

In this section we will introduce you how to create a mirror ball. The beaming dots look as if they are from the real mirror ball.

In this tutorial we will start by making dot pattern using the example from How to Create a Seamless Pattern (Photoshop CS5).

We will combine filters to make the mirror ball glow. You can make it easier than you think.

Step01 Create New File for Pattern

Create a new layer using the setting above to make a pattern.

Step02 Make Dotted Pattern

Using the example from How to Create a Seamless Pattern (Photoshop CS5), create a dot pattern and save.

Draw a precise circle sized 43px x 43px using the Ellipse Tool. The dot pattern will me the mirror ball beam.

Step03 Create a New File to Make a Mirror Ball Sphere

Create a new file with the setting above to make the sphere.

Step04 Fill with Dot Pattern

Open a dialog box [Edit > Paint Bucket]. Select the pattern created in Step02 and fill the layer.

This is a dot pattern filled image.

Step05 Circle the Dot Pattern

Create a precise circle using the “Ellipse Selection Tool” (Shift + Drag). Make sure the blue dot to be the center of the circle as shown above.

Step06 Transform Selection

Keep selecting the circle, set the preference using the example above [Filter > Transform > Sphere] and transform only the selected part into sphere.

Step07 Clip It Roundly

Clip the image roundly to make it into a mirror ball.

If you clip it as it is you would clip the selected part as well. In order to avoid this, inverse the selection [Selection > Inverse Selection] and remove outside of the sphere (Ctrl + X).

Step08 Create Dot Beams

We will start creating the beams here.

Copy the layer created in Step07. Let each dot beam by [Filter > Blur > Radial Blur > Repeat 3 Times].

Step09 Sharpen the Beams

Sharpen the beams created with the Blur Filter a little.

Do it by [Filter > Sharp > Smart Sharp] one each from different angles.

Smart Sharp Filter Image

This is how the smart sharp effect looks like.

You can see that the blurred, dull beams transformed sharp and rough.

Step10 Smoothen the Beams

Smoothen the smart effect rough beams. [Filter > Blur > Radial Blur x1]

Now you have mirror ball beams.

The beam lines are clear after being smoothened as we used the Blur Filter after the smart sharp effect.

Step11 Set the Background Color

Change the background color to match the mirror ball. Select the background layer and pick black [Edit > Paint Bucket > Black]

 Done!

You are done! With the dark background, the mirror ball beams stand out and look realistic.

The “Blur Filter” dull beams transformed into sharp ones with the help of “Smart Sharp Filter”.

There are many types of filters and you can create various effects by combining them. Be creative and try different filters for unexpected effects.
