How to Create Umbrella Illustration (Illustrator)

In this section we will introduce you how to create umbrella illustration. The color of the umbrellas is the key factor for impressions you would like to create.

This is a very easy technique and you can arrange it as you like by changing the color and patterns. You can transform the shape as well. Once you know how, you will be able to convert it to fit your liking.

Step01 Arrange Circles to Make the Umbrella Shape

Draw circles for the umbrella shape.

Draw a small circle using the “Ellipse Tool” and drag and copy it by pressing (Alt + Shift). Let it go when the anchor points overlap and the smart guide appears as shown above. Do this twice and arrange 3 circles.

Step02 Draw a Big Circle for the Umbrella Top

For the top part of the umbrella, draw a circle which is the same sized of the 3 circles created in Step01.

Drag it to the side from the center of the 3 circles while pressing (Alt + Shift), When the smart guide appears, drag it above and create a precise circle. Then move it behind [Right Click > Order > To Back].

Step03 Create a Hemicycle

Transform the big precise circle created in Step02 into a hemicycle.

Click the bottom anchor point of the precise circle using the “Direct Selection Tool”, remove it with the <Del Key> and create a hemicycle.

Step04 Create the Pointy Parts

Create the pointy parts of the umbrella. Select all the object and click [Pathfinder > Minus Front/Subtract].

Step05 Create Umbrella Ribs

Create the umbrella ribs.

Like in Step02, draw an oval from the center (Alt + Drag) from the top anchor point and then with 2 other anchor points. Remove the bottom anchor points [Click > Del] and make it a hemicycle.

Outline it by [Object > Path > Path Outline]

Step06 Create the Umbrella Stick

Create the umbrella stick. Draw a precise circle that fits to the umbrella top using the “Eclipse Tool” [No Fill/With Line].

Remove the top anchor point of the precise circle [Click > Delete (Del Key)].

Step07 Change the Line Thickness

Change the width of the hemicycle as shown above [width: 14pt].

Then outline it [Object > Path > Path Outline].

Step08 Lengthen the Handle

Add a same sized rectangle to the side of the hemicycle. The color is changed for easier view.

Draw a rectangle which is the same size of the hemicycle from the two anchor points shown above.

Union objects [Select All > Pathfinder > Union]

Step09 Create Umbrella Stick

Create Umbrella Stick.

Draw a straight line from the center using the example above with the “Rectangle Tool” while pressing the Shift key. [width: 6pt]. To make it round, set it [Tip: Round Tip] and outline it.

Then click [Right Click > Order > To Back] and arrange the place of the handle.

Done!

You are done!

We made 3 pointy parts in this tutorial. You can increase the number of the pointy parts and change the color, shape, and patterns.

Different Version

I overlapped the color and pattern using the appearance with this image.

The shape of the umbrellas are the same but the different colors give a totally different impression.

Create your own umbrellas by changing the shape and colors.
