How to Create Raindrop Illustration (Illustrator)

In this section we will introduce you how to create the colorful rain postcard. Write any message in the blank space and give it to someone as a message card.

With this colorful postcard, a receiver can be happy on a gloomy rainy day.

You, the sender will be happy too while creating this postcard.

Step01 Arrange the Cloud Illustration

Using the tutorial How to create a balloon speech illustration (Illustrator), draw cloud illustration. [Fill: white/ Line: black] (We will make it lineless at the end).

Let them run off the edge a little to make it cute.

Step02 Create Raindrop Shape 1

Create a raindrop.

Draw a precise circle using the Ellipse Tool while pressing the <Shift Key>. Click the top anchor point of the precise part with the [Switch Anchor Point] to make the tip pointy. You can adjust the size later so make it the size you like.

Step03 Create Raindrop Shape 2

It is too round for a raindrop shape so let’s adjust the shape.

Expand the switched corner point in Step02 with the “Direct Selection Tool” while pressing the Shift key.

Now you have a raindrop illustration.

Step04 Adjust the Raindrop Size

Adjust the size of the raindrop in accordance of the cloud illustration from Step01.

You can adjust it using the example above or make it the way you like.

Step05 Save as a Symbol

Save the raindrop created in Step04 as a symbol.

Drag the raindrop to the <Symbol Palette>, set the preference using the example above and click “OK”. Now it is saved as a symbol.

Step06 Symbol Settings

Arrange the raindrops as they are raining using the Symbol.

Click the raindrop symbol from Step04 and select “Symbol Spree Tool”.

Step07 Use Symbol Spree Tool

After setting up the “Symbol Spree Tool”, arrange raindrops the way you like by clicking them as if they are raining.

If you put one in the wrong place, remove it by (Ctrl + Z). You can remove the ones arranged in the beginning so leave them as they are.

Step08 Release Symbol Link

To transform the arranged symbol into object, click <Release Symbol Link> in the “Symbol Palette”.

If you think you have too many raindrops, you can remove them by clicking with the “Group Selection Tool” and press <Del Key> or <Ctrl + X>.

Step09 Change the Raindrop Color

Apply gradation on the raindrops.

Select <Summer Multicolor> using the example above. Set the preference as shown above in the “Gradient Palette”. Set the gradation horizontal.

Gradation Applied Image

The raindrop color turned into rainbow and they are very cute.

Step10 Create Background

Create an object which is the same size of the “Art Board”. Set it <Pastel Multi Color 4>.

Move it to behind by [Right Click > Order > To Back] to make it the background.

Gradation Background Image

The impression is very different with the gradation background.

Step11 Remove Cloud Lines

We only had cloud lines so they were easier to see. Remove them by [Line: No]. Without the lines, it looks more slimmed-down.

Step12 Use Clipping Mask

Remove the objects outside the art board.

Create an object which is the same size of the art board. Select all the object and hide unwanted objects with [Object > Clipping Mask > Create].

Clipping Mask Image

We applied Clipping Mask on the Image.

We did not actually remove the objects so the size of the file remains the same. For further information on Clipping Mask, see How to Clip a Picture in Illustrator.

Done!

Now it’s all done. I put some messages in the clouds.

Usually rains are associated with blue but the colorful rain like this is also fun.

We used a pre-set gradation this time but you could also use your own color.  Be creative and create your own cute postcard.
