How to Create Fabric Texture (Photoshop)

In this section we will introduce you how to create a casual fabric style texture in Photoshop.

The texture looks woven with delicate threads. You can use it for website backgrounds and such. It is easy to make and we will use Photoshop [Fiber].

We will also show how to clip specified size images.

Step01 [New] Setting

Open [New] dialog box.

Set the canvas size to create the fabric texture on. You can pick any size but make sure you will set the width and height the same lengths to make a square.

Step02 Set Draw and Background Color to Be the Fabric Base

Set draw and background color.

This time we set the draw color white (#ffffff) and the background color gray (#efeded). Draw color will be the fiber color and background color will be the texture’s background color.

Step03 Apply Fiber

Click [Filter > Draw > Fiber].

[Fiber] dialog box will open. Set the preference as shown above. Click OK.

Step04 Fiber Texture

Fiber is applied and now we have vertical fibrous texture.

Step07 Copied Layer Rotated

Copied layer (background copy) rotated 90 degrees and the fiber texture turned horizontal.

Select the copied layer (background copy) in [Layer Panel] and change the generate mode into [Multiplication].

Step08 Fabric Texture Completed!

The top and bottom texture layers overlap nicely and make a good fabric texture.

This is all for the fabric texture. If you are happy with the size, this is the end of the steps.

Next steps will show how to clip the image for specified size.

Step09 Clip Texture with Specified Size

Currently the size of the texture is an 800 x 800 square. We will transform it into an 800 x 600 rectangle.

Select [Rectangle Tool], [Lock] the style in the option bar and specify the width and length.

The texture looks like natural fabric. You can also create different colored texture by changing the generate and background colors.
