How to Create Random Pattern with Eraser Tool (Illustrator)

In this section we will introduce you how to create a random pattern using Eraser Tool. We will first draw a line on an object with Eraser Tool and then create independent objects which can be modified separately.

This technique is useful as you can save it as a pattern and create different patterns. You will not need to create shapes every time you make patterns.

Step01 Draw Rectangle

Draw a shape. This time we draw a rectangle but it can be any shape.

Step02 Eraser Tool Setting

Double click “Eraser Tool” and set the setting using the example above. The value determines the size and the angle. This time we use a simple 5pt precise circle.

Step03 Drag Crossly

Draw a straight line crossly. Drag while pressing the Shift key. If you would like a hand drawn line, do not press Shift. Repeat this and draw any lines you like.

Step04 After Drawing Lines

We randomly drew lines on the rectangle. When you look at the layer you can see that the objects are ungrouped and independent. Next, apply any colors you like.

Color Setting

We applied light colors. You can use this as a pattern as it is or transform.

Usage: Save as Pattern

Save it as a pattern. The left one is merely minimized and the right one is minimized and the nine objects are rearranged randomly.

(Retaled Articles:How to transform just the middle of the pattern without changing the object shape on Illustrator)

Customize 1

The pattern is applied on the logo.

Customize 2

The pattern is used as the background of the logo. This looks very different from the one applied in the logo.

Customize 3

The pattern is applied on the thin lines on the background.

You can create various designs with one pattern. We only used it as a pattern this time but the possibility is endless.

You can also transform it or use it as digital collage image. Be creative and explore.
