How to Create 3D Sealing Wax in Illustrator

In this section we will introduce you how to create the sealing wax illustration using the 3D effect in Illustrator. Sealing wax is used to seal an envelopes. These days we can buy sticker ones.

We will create the melted was effect using 3D feature. We will need multiple layers for one illustration.

It might seem difficult at first but once you make the frame of the wax, the only thing you need to do is to arrange illustration or initials. This will create a very nice design.

Step01 Draw Wax Base

Draw a melted was shape with Pen Tool. You do not need to be precise as you will be able to modify the shape later. Color [B70909] / No line.

Step02 Arrange Precise Circle in Middle

Arrange a precise circle on the wax base. [Copy (Middle Circle1) > Paste Front (Middle Circle1 Copy)]. Disable the view of the copied layer for the next task.

Step03 Cut Wax Base Center

Select the precise circle from Step02 and the base layer and cut the center with [Pathfinder > Minus Front/Subtract]. Now we have the wax base.

Step04 Create Stereoscopic Effect with 3D

The wax base is still flat. We will create stereoscopic effect with 3D. [Effect > 3D > Bevel] Apply the setting above. Adjust the place of lighting by dragging.

Stereoscopic Effect of Base

The flat wax now has a stereo scopic effect and looks thick.

Step05 Create First Precise Circle Inside

[Copy > Frost Copy] the disabled circle layer (middle circle1 copy) in Step02 and disable the view of the copied layer again.

Apply the setting above on the copied layer [Object > Path > Offset Path] and create a smaller circle (middle circle2).

Step06 Cut Center of Circle

Select both of the copied layer in Step05 (middle circle copy1) and the smaller circle (middle circle2) and cut the center like we did in Step03. This will be the inside line.

Step07 Create Stereoscopic Effect with 3D

Create a stereoscopic effect of the circle using 3D. Arrange the lighting the other side of Step04.

Stereoscopic Effect of Line

Now we have two thin lines. It now looks even more stereoscopic inside by adding the 3D effect on the lines.

Step08 Create Second Circle Inside

*The two lines in Step07 are disabled for easier understanding.

Create the circle inside. Select [Object > Path > Offset Path] for the circle layer from Step05. Now we have a smaller circle (middle circle2).

Step09 Create Stereoscopic Effect on Circle

Apply 3D setting using the example above. Lighting effect place is similar to Step07.

Stereoscopic Inside

Now we have a stereoscopic effect inside the circle. We are almost there.

Step10 Color Setting

Since we did not apply 3D effect on the second line, the color there looks a little brighter than the other parts. Adjust the color so that the parts blend in. Color [a51111].

Sealing Wax Frame Completed

Now the frame is completed. We adjusted the color in Step10 so the design looks natural and realistic with the 3D effect.

You can place any illustrations or initials inside.

Customize: Text Arrangement

Arrange a letter inside and apply setting using the example above. The font used here is < Tiranti Solid Plain: 1.0>.

Customization Completed

What do you think? The texture enhances greatly by adding a letter.

Once you have the wax frame, you can insert any text or illustration inside. Different fonts and illustration make a different effects. You can also change the color.

If you do not like the shape of the wax, you can also adjust it at the end.
