In this section we will introduce you how to create Japanese ink painting background.
This tutorial is very easy. You will just need to paint with a brush and that’s it. You can create a quaint Japanese ink painting background by randomly painting with brush.
Even a beginner can do this easily.
Open Brush Panel (Window > Brush) and click [Click Right Top Icon > Open Brush Library > Art > Art_Ink].
We set up the brush setting. This is the crucial part in the tutorial.
1) Select Brush Tool 2) Select [Calligraphy2] in Art_Ink Panel .
Select 20pt for line and 70% for opacity in the option bar. You can create the ink painting base by lowering the opacity level greatly.
Paint it with Brush randomly. You can go outside the art board.
Express shadings by repainting and sweeping across the board.
Switch the brush. You can create enhanced texture by changing the brush and repainting with it.
Click [Strong Ink Fill] from Art_Ink panel and set the line 5pt and the opacity level 5%.
Paint it with brush randomly like in Step03.
Paint it with shading in mind. You can create dark part by painting over and over.
Now you have got ink painting background. You could call this a Japanese style grange design.
Step05 was good enough for background but let’s add some accents.
Select [Splash] in [Art_Ink Panel], click anywhere and put splash marks on the board. The red splash can be a good accent.
Remove the unwanted parts that are out of the edges.
Select all objects (Ctrl + A) and group them (Ctrl + G). Next, create a rectangle which is the same size of the art board.
Select all the layers and click [Object > Clipping Mask > Create].
(In order to select all the layers, open Layer Panel (Window > Layer) and click the right sides of each layer while pressing Shift key. (A blue square appears when the layer is selected.))
Clipping Mask is applied and the object is clipped in the same size as the art board.
Insert text at the end.
This is a Japanese design so input the text vertically. Press Text Tool for a long time and select Text Tool (Vertical). The only thing left to do is inserting text.
This is a Japanese design so select a font that fits the theme, such as Mincho or Kaisho.
FYI, we used Morisawa “A-OTF European Kaisho” in this tutorial. Morisawa font is expensive but there are many beautiful fonts. It is often used by professionals.
By the way, the sentence we used here is from “Heike Monogatari”.
