How to Insert Text Alongside of Object (Path) (Illustrator)

In this section we will introduce you how to insert texts alongside of an object (path). You can insert alongside of straight/curved open paths and closed shape paths.

We will introduce you how to insert text alongside of closed path shape objects (circle/square/star). Refer to How to Insert Text Alongside f Path for the technique with open paths such as curved/straight lines.

Step01 Draw Shape

Draw a circle like above. Select [Path Superscript Tool] and click top of the path.

Step02 Insert Text

Click top of the path with [Path Superscript Tool] and a cursor appears on top of the path. The oval line also disappears and appears like in the guide.

At this stage, the text would appear alongside of the oval by just typing text.

Step03 Adjust Text Place

Drag the <bracket> that appears above and adjust the place of text by dragging it to the sides or reversing.

Step04 Adjust Text Place1

The text is aligned to the right. Adjust it to the middle.

Place the icon to the [Starting Point Bracket] and an arrow appears. Drag it to left like the image above.

It can be rough as you can adjust it later.

Step05 Adjust Text Place2

*The red square icon above appears when hidden. Since we moved the starting point in Step04, the text appears bigger than the path.

This time let the [Ending Point Bracket] arrow appear and drag the text to left.

Step06 Adjust Text Place3

You can move the [Middle Bracket] to left or right. It is easy to place it anywhere you like.

Step07 Adjust Text Place4

Not only to left or right, [Middle Bracket] can be placed inside the path and the text would appear reversed.

You can adjust placement of the text similarly when it is inside.

Step08 Adjust Placement by Text Size

The text is hidden partially. Adjust it by shortening the spaces between text in <Text Panel>.

This time we do not want to change the text size. Adjust [Tracking] value and do not change the font size.

Step09 Apply Effect on Path Superscript 1

Select the text on the path, double click Text Tool and open <Path Superscript Option>.

The texts would appear like above by applying each effect. You can adjust placement in the same way.

Step10 Apply Effect on Path Superscript 2

After applying <Path Placement>, the placements of text appear like above. You can adjust and apply <effect> in the same way.

Customize

I inserted text alongside of the star and the circle. The text would appear beautifully with a shape such as star by adjusting spacing of text.

You can put any text in any way you like as long as the shapes are paths.

Adjusting text is a little troublesome but you can create great designs once you know how. Try with different shapes.
