How to Create Pattern with Color Combination (Illustrator)

In this section we will introduce you how to create the pattern with color combination in Illustrator.

The key factor here is color combination. You can create a stylish pattern even if you are a beginner. We used chic coloring to fit this fall and winter season.

Step01 Draw Rectangle with Dimension of Art Board

Open a new file in Illustrator and draw a rectangle with dimension of the art board. Fill with #E0DBD3 with no line.

Lock the rectangle layer for later task.

Step02 Create Color Combination

Next, create a color combination in advance. This is the key factor in this tutorial.

Create a color combination using Rectangle Tool at side of the art board so that creating art combination becomes easier and the combination would appear unionized.

Step03 Create Pattern

Now let’s start creating pattern.

Create a rounded rectangle using Rectangle Tool and click [Object >Transform > Transform Each]. Set it 85% like above and click [Copy]. (Do not forget to click copy!)

Step04 Apply Transform Duplication Twice

Next, apply transform duplication (Ctrl + D) twice.

Now three minimized rounded rectangles are created inside the rounded rectangle!

Step05 Adjustment

The design is a little basic so we add some adjustment.

Select the second rounded rectangle from inside and click [Object > Transform > Enlarge/Minimize].Set it 95% and click OK. Now we have the base pattern.

Step06 Color Pattern

Now we start coloring the pattern.

Apply the color pattern created in Step02, 1) select the rounded rectangle you like to color, 2) select Eyedropper tool and 3) click the combination you prefer.

Similarly, apply color combination with other rounded rectangles similarly. Any color order would be OK.

Step07 Create Different Colored Pattern

Copy and paste the rounded rectangle and create pattern in other color combination.

Create different sized rectangles. This is done by placing them.

Done!

I placed different sized/colored patterns randomly.

This is a very simple design and stylish. The key here is the color arrangement.The color combination here is very important.

In this tutorial, we introduced the technique to extract with Eye Dropper. You can do it smoothly without being troubled with color combination. Since the color combination is the key, arrangement part does not really matter. Please try.
