How to Create Rough Font (Photoshop)

In this section we will introduce you how to create the rough font in Photoshop.

This design has become popular these days and it is ideal for grange styled designs.

The technique is very easy. We will use Photoshop this time but you can do the same in Illustrator as well. For the tutorial with Illustrator, refer to How to Create Blurred Stamp Illustration.

Step01 Insert Thick Font

First, insert text in thick font. We used Arial Bold this time. You can use similar fonts in case you do not have it. Shorten the spaces of the letters by Tracking (Text Panel > Selected Text Tracking Setting).

Step02 Rasterize Font

Rasterize the inserted font for later tasks.Select the text layer and click [Layer > Rasterize > Text].

Step03 Add Roughness to Font with Eraser Tool

Next, we add roughness to the text with Eraser Tool.

1) Select Eraser Tool 2) click Tool Panel brush ▾ 3) click ▶ 4) select M brush 5) select [Dry Brush 1] from M brushes.

Step04 Click Font with Brush

Click on the text with [Dry Brush 1].

Do not drag, just click on the text. You can deepen the roughness by repeating clicks.

Done!

Add a background image and the task is complete!

Now you have a slightly worn out rough font. The technique was easy. In this tutorial we used [Dry Brush 1] and there are more brush options in Photoshop.

You can also add scratch effect. Be creative and explore.
