In this section we will introduce you how to create the simple cobweb illustration in Illustrator.
This can be used not only with spiders but also with sculls, Halloween characters, or cute images such as hearts or ribbons.
You can create webs very easily with hexagons. Let’s find out how we can do it.
Draw two different sized hexagons and let them share the midpoint. No fill/With line.
Select the two hexagons and set <Blend Option>. Create blend and create two different sized hexagons inside.
We have created four hexagons with Blend. However, we cannot transform them yet. Click [Object > Divide/Expand].
In order to warp the hexagons towards inside, apply the setting above in [Effect > Path Transform > Blowout/Inflate] and transform the web.
The transform is not actual yet. Do [Object > Divide Appearance].
Add straight lines with [Straight Line Tool] like you connect the edges of the hexagons. The length does not matter.
Select the lines and the anchorpoints on the lines with [Direct Selection Tool] and drag them to any directions you like.
Do the same things with other parts and distort the web.
Done! This was easier than it looked, wasn’t it?
You can create different types of cobwebs easily by customizing the lines or the number of hexagons.
It is interesting to combine different cobwebs like in the ecample. You can swatch save it as a pattern. Be creative ans use this with a logo or other illustrations.
