In this section we will introduce you how to create the snow crystal illustration without using Pen Tool.
This illustration looks as if it is drawn by Pen Tool; actually, we used an existing brush (pre-installed) for this illustration. You can finish it in a blink just by drawing straight lines.
You can create different looking snow crystals by combining existing brushes. Even if you are not familiar with Pen Tool, you can create nice designs easily.
Draw a straight line horizontally with <Command Line Tool> and select “Wave Form” in <Decorative Brush Palette>.
When “Wave Form” is applied, outline it [Object > Path > Path Outline].
The horizontal line of the “Wave Form” is not straight so we need modify it.
Draw a rectangle with <Rectangle Tool> and place it over the complex part of the “Wave Form” object.
Remove the unwanted part by clicking [Select All > Pathfinder > Minus Front/Subtract].Now it turned straight.
Keep selecting the “Wave Form” object, click “Reflect Tool” and Alt+Click the most bottom anchor point under the “Wave Form” object. Apply the setting above.
Now the inversed object is pasted on the other side.
Combine the two objects with [Select All > Pathfinder > Combine].
Now you have the top part of the crystal.
Create the bottom part.
Like in Step01, apply “Tulip” this time.
Rotate “Tulip” 180°and arrange it like the example above. Combine the two objects [Select All > Combine Pathfinder].
Now you have the snow crystal base object.
To copy the object 5 times, apply the setting above on [Effect > Path Transform > Transform].
The object is copied 5 times and looks more like a snow crystal. Do [Object >Divide Appearance].
Draw a hexagon with <Polygon Tool> and arrange it at the middle.
The hexagon is optional. You do not have to add it if you prefer a simple crystal.
The snow crystal is completed.
Even if you are not good at Pen Tool, you can create a nice design by combining brushes.
You don’t need Pen Tool to create new patterns. Simply add circles or emboss on the object.
You can also create different designs by relocating anchor points. Try the techniques if you prefer not to use Pen Tool.
