How to Create the Simple Heart without using Pencil Tool (Illustrator)

For those who want to illustrate lovely hearts but cannot illustrate a heart well using the pen tool, this is the good news, you can illustrate a lovely heart without using a pen tool!

Now we would like to introduce you how to make a simple heart without using pen tool on Illustrator. This is easy and lovely, and will be good for book illustration, background illustration, etc.

Let’s see how we illustrate a heart generally. Making heart illustration starts with drawing a precise circle. Switch the anchor point to deform the circle, and then you get a heart. Let’s see how to make a precise circle using the eclipse tool. It’s very easy, try it!

Step01 Draw a precise circle using the eclipse tool

Using the eclipse tool, draw a precise circle pushing the shift key.

Please note that final size of the completed heart will be about 2/3 of this circle. So please image the heart you want to get.

Step02 Switch the upper and lower anchor points

Sharpen the upper and lower side of the circle.

Use the “Switching the anchor points” tool, and click the upper and lower anchor points to switch them into corner points. Then, the upper and lower points will be sharpened, and the circle will be deformed as shown in the right image.

Step03 Move the anchor points

Deform the upper sharpened point to be concave.

Use the “Direct select tool” and drag the upper anchor point downwards until the position a little lower than the center of the circle.

Now the heart is obtained. If you like this shape of a heart, you can finish drawing. If you want to make a sharper heart, try to make it adjusting the process.

Step04 Narrow the width

Use the “Select tool” and select the heart to show the boundy box.

Drag the left handle (white precise square) toward right until the heart become a shape you like.

Now completed

Now a lovely heart is drawn. It’s easy, isn’t it?

You can make heart illustrations with different tastes by changing the drawing down position of the anchor point or by changing the scale.

The impressions of heart illustrations differ from one another by slight difference of each shape. Try to make a better heart illustration which fits with the total design.
