How to Create Gerbera Illustration

How to make a gerbera illustration(Adobe Illustrator)

I will introduce how to make a gerbera illustration on Illustrator. I will make the overlapping parts transparent by using a function called 「Middle window」.

You are probably not familiar with the term Transparency. It is to open a hole in the white part of the above picture’s gerbera illustration and make it so that the background colour can be seen. At first glance it seems difficult, but the method is very simple. Because with the background colour, the gerbera illustration’s feeling also changes, I think it can be used for a variety of things.

The general work flow is ①Draw a circle→②Transform→③Rotate and copy→④Shape mode – those are the 4 steps. Even though it is simple to make, it is lovely, so please, by all means, try to make it!

Step01 Draw a circle

While pressing Shift with the 「Ellipse tool」, draw a circle. Please choose a colour you like for [Fill:Yes・Line:Yes].

Step02 Make the gerbera flower petal with path transform

Select the circle and select 「Effect→Path transform→Shrink/Expand」.

Step03 Apply the shrink/expand effect

Set [shrink/expand] like in the above picture and puncture the circle so it changes to the letter X. With that, 4 gerbera petals have been made at once.

Step04 Rotate and copy the flower petals

With the flower petals selected, set the 「Rotation tool」 like in the picture above. When you do that, the flower petals will be rotated and copied.

Step05 Rotate and copy the flower petals and make a gerbera shape

In that state, rotate and copy three times. (Ctrl+D)x3

It looks more like a gerbera flower, but there is still something lacking, right?

Step06 Middle window

Here, we will use this time’s point, 「Middle window」.

Select all the flower petals [Path finder→Shape mode→Middle window (Alt+Click)]. With that, the overlapped parts became transparent and it is now possible to see the background colour. (Here, the background colour is white, so in the part that has been taken out, it has become white.)

With that, the gerbera illustration is finished.

Step07 Separate appearance

Though it looks finished, actually it is still in the state where there are just multiple circles rotated. Separate the appearance to finish the gerbera illustration.

About separating the appearance, because there is a more detailed explanation in What’s the “appearance” and what does it mean to divide it?, please refer to that.

Finished

A cute gerbera illustration has been finished.

I think it is very easy to make, more so than it appeared to be at first glance. Please try a variety of arrangements by changing the colour and size.
