How to Create Icon with Reflection in Illustrator

How to make icons that reflect on Illustrator

In this section we will introduce you how to create the icon with reflection in Illustrator.

The icon looks as it is reflecting on a shiny floor. We will show you how to create an icon from the Symbol and create reflection under the icon with Opacity Mask.

It would be ideal to make your own icon, however, this time we will be using Symbol Tool in Illustrator CS5.

Step01 Open Symbol in Illustrator [Mobile]

First, let’s make the icon. This time we will use Symbol Tool in Illustrator CS5.

Open Symbol (Window→Symbol), and select [Click upper left→Open symbol library→Mobile].

Step02 Drop the symbol

Drag [Home-Grey] from the middle of mobile to on top of the art board.

[Home-Grey] is in the lower portion.

Step03 Unlock the Link from the Symbol

Unlock the link from the symbol.

Select the symbol and click on [Unlock the Link from Symbol] in Symbol Panel.

Step04 The Symbol is Unlocked

The link is unlocked from the symbol.

Step05 Change the icon colour and size

The icon is fine as it is, but let’s try customize the size and the color. Change the size and the color of the icon according to you preference.

For example, I applied a blue gradient on the icon. The settings are as shown above.

Step06 Create Reflection

Apply horizontal reflection on the icon.

Select the icon and select [Object→Transform→Reflect].

Step07 Reflect settings

Apply the settings shown above in the Reflect Dialog Box.

(Don’t forget to click copy!)

Step08 The reflected icon is copied

Reflection is applied on the icon and it is reverse-copied.

Step09 Move the reflected icon under

With the reflected and copied icon selected, move it under.

Please arrange it like in the above picture so that the icon is just not touching.

Step10 Draw Rectangle above the Icon and Apply Gradient

The reflection portion has been completed.

Above the reflected icon, arrange a rectangle with a white/black gradation applied (refer to the above picture).

Reflection is applied to the rectangle and the reflected icon’s overlapping parts. Please arrange the rectangle about 1/4 places from above the reflected icon.

Step11 Select the rectangle and reflected icon

Select both the rectangle and reflected icon.

Step12 Make the opacity mask

Make the opacity mask.

With the rectangle and reflected icon selected, select [Transparency panel (Window→Transparency)→Click the upper left→Make opacity mask.

Step13 Opacity mask is used on the icon

The opacity mask is used on the reflected icon.

The icon looks like it has reflection now, doesn’t it?
