In this section you will learn how to attach and combine the paths using Illustrator.
You will need to know this technique when designing using the pen tool. This is a basic technique which can be tricky. Master it by learning this step by step tutorial. Let’s start.
First, combine the right two anchor point using the example above.
You might ask “why don’t you put the 4 altogether at once?”. We will come back to this later. We will first see how to combine the two anchor points on the right.
Select Direct Selection Tool.
Drag the two anchor points on the left as if you are folding them.
Two anchor points are selected.
Check whether the two selected anchor points are shown as black squares.
Click [Right Click ->Combine] (or Object -> Path -> Combine).
The two anchor points on the right are combined.
Combine the two anchor points on the left similarly.
Drag and select the two anchor points on the left using the direct select tool. Click [Right Click-> Combine] (or Object -> Path -> Combine).
The two anchor points on the left are combined and the two paths are attached.
This is how you attach two paths.
You need to remember one thing when combining paths.
You cannot combine closed paths. A closed path is a path whose all anchor points are closed (Please refer to the image above, below). On the other hand, an open path is a path with detached corner points (Please refer to the image above, up).
An error message appears when trying to combine closed paths.
Please also remember you must always select two anchor points. An error message appears when trying to combine four points as shown in the image above.
What do you think of the method of combining the paths using Illustrator?
It is easy to combine paths but please remember that you cannot combine closed paths and you must always select two anchor points.
