How to clip text with image in Illustrator

In this section you will learn how to clip text with image in Illustrator.

The method is the same as the previous section How to Clip a Picture in Illustrator. The only difference is that you will use text instead of shape or path. Let’s find out.

Step01 Place text

When you have an image to clip out ready, place any text where you would like to clip.

Step02 Clipping complete

You have successfully clipped out text with image. It is very easy to do once you know how. Please see How to Clip a Picture in Illustrator for further reference.

Step03 Moving the clipped out text

If you are not satisfied with place you clipped out the text, you can adjust the place by moving the layer.

You clipped the image by creating a clipping mask and the original image is still there.

If you only select the layer of the text Spring and move, it only displays where the text and the image overlap and you can adjust the place of the image within the photo.

Step04 If you outline text…

If you outline text before clipping you cannot create a clipping mask as shown above. Being unable to use clipping mask means no clipping.

When you outline text, you create multiple objects. Clipping mask uses one object, displays overlapped parts and hides unwanted parts. When you have multiple, use “multiple path” for clipping.

However, if you are dealing with one letter, it is possible to clip with clipping mask as it is only one object.
