I will introduce how to make a tag illustration on Illustrator.
I often notice tag designs, but this time I thought I would like to try making a cute tag that has a thin and turned up feeling to it.
To produce a turned-up tag, transform a rectangle with warp and add shadow. I am using the symbol tool Illustrator CS5 is equipped with for the right of the tag illustration.
Now, let’s take a look at the actual method.
First, draw the rectangle that will be below the tag.
Using the ellipse tool, draw a rectangle like in the picture above. It is fine to make the tag the size that you want to make it.
Make a rectangle above the rectangle made in Step01 like in the picture.
This rectangle will become the base for the tag. Let’s set it to a colour you like.
Make the width a little shorter than that of the rectangle below it, and the height about 1px higher than that of the rectangle below it.
Make the rectangle seem turned up.
Select the top triangle and select [Effect→Warp→Rising].
Because the warp dialogue box is displayed, set the options like in the above picture and click OK.
After applying the effect to the top rectangle, it seems like it is turned up.
With that, the tag portion is finished. Next is adding the shadow.
Make the shadow below the tag.
Copy the tag made in Step05.Change the colour of the copied tag and then reduce and rotate it.
Because it is a shadow, let’s set the colour to grey. Please fine-tune the reduction and rotation proportions while referring to the above photo. With that, the shadow is finished.
Move the finished shadow layer to below the tag layer.
Open [Layer panel] (Window→Layer), and drag and move the layer with the shadow below the tag layer. (Refer to the above picture.)
The shadow has moved to below the tag!
If the shadow position does not match, using the selection tool, please move the shadow and fine-tune.
Shade the shadow.
Using the selection tool, select the shadow and select [Effect→Blur→Gaussian Blur].
Because the Gaussian blur dialogue box is displayed, set the options like in the above picture. Radius: 6.0px.
After applying shading, the shadow is more like a shadow.
For the purpose of the tag and shadow later, please separate the appearance. (About separating the appearance, please refer to What’s the “appearance” and what does it mean to divide it?)
It is pretty much finished! There is only a little more.
Move the tag and shadow and match with the below rectangle.
To make it seem more like a tag, make a rectangle to the left of the tag. It will look better if the rectangle colour is similar.
With that, the tag is finished!
With just that, it is already a sufficiently stylish tag, isn’t it? This time I think I would like to add a design to the left.
Add a design to the left of the tag.
Originally, it would be better to make a new design, but this time I cut a few corners.
Open [Symbol panel] (Window→Symbol) and click the upper left. Select [Symbol library→web icon]. (This time the symbol used is aimed for those using CS5. Please use another symbol if you do not have the symbol above.)
Because the web icon panel is open, drag an icon you like to the art board.
Select the symbol you dragged and click [Symbol panel→Delete the link to symbol] (Refer to the above picture)
apply a colour that you like to the symbol that had its link deleted and make it smaller to match the tag’s size. It will look better if you make the outline colour the same colour as the rectangle on the left of the tag.
With that, the tag is finished!
A tag that has a thin and turned up feeling to it is finished!
This time, the pen tool was not used at all, but a cute tag was made, right?
It might also be interesting to apply a gradation to the tag illustration or to use a notebook-style background.
