I will introduce how to make a logo design that looks like a sketch on Illustrator.
Like in the above picture, it is a design that looks like it was drawn by pencil. It seems like it can be used for logo titles and headings and typography.
With that said, let’s take a look at the method at once.
Write whatever words you like using the Type tool
Please use a wide font. (For example, use Arial.)
Outline the words.
Select the words and click [Left click→Make outline] (Or Format→Make outline).
(Related to making an outline for the words, it is explained in more detail in How to shape and modify texts using Illustrator. Please take a look and refer to that as well.)
Process the words with a sketch effect.
Select the words and click [Effect→Sketch→Graphic pen].
Because the [Graphic pen] settings are open, set them while referring to the above picture.
It is possible to check the preview of the graphic pen effect in the left picture. While looking at the preview, please set it to settings that you like.
A hand-drawn sketch effect has been applied to the words. The effect makes it seem like the words will filled in by pencil, doesn’t it?
In the case that the word colour is black, it is finished, but if you want to add colour to the words, you need to also use [Make live trace] and convert to a vector image.
Separate the appearance.
Select the object and click [Object→Separate appearance].
(Related to separating appearance, there is a more detailed explanation in What’s the “appearance” and what does it mean to divide it? For those who do not understand, please try referring to that.)
Draw live trace and extend.
With the object selected, click [Object→Live trace→Draw and extend].
Furthermore, with the object selected, click [Left click→Delete group] (or Object→Delete group).
After deleting the group, click once on top of the art board on a place where there is nothing and delete the selection. After that, again select the outside layer and shift it slightly and delete it.
Using Ctrl+A (or Select→Select all), select all. Continuing that, make the objects a group by Left click→Group (or Object→Group)
With that, the preparations for adding colour are done.
Now, set it to a colour you like, and it is finished.
I tried setting it to colourful red, blue, and yellow. It is a logo design that looks like it was filled in with pencil and colour pencil, doesn’t it? Though the sketch effect itself was simple, the method for adding colour may have been a bit complicated.
There are many ways to use this sketch design besides logos. Please try a variety of them.
