In this section we will introduce you how to engrail texts in Illustrator. We will be using Offset Path Tool to do this.
[Offset Path] is a tool to make the paths bolder equal to the value designated in the outside of the path. This time, we will engrail characters by adopting this [Offset Path] to the text.
First, insert any text with [Text Tool].
Select your favorite color. In the example, I picked pale pink.
Outline the text to engrail it.
Select the text and [Right-Click > Outline]
The text is outlined.
By outlining the text, you can treat it like an image. You are ready to engrail the text.
Let’s start engrailing the text.
Select the text and click [Object > Path > Offset Path].
[Offset Path] dialog box pops up. Apply the settings shown above. (By checking on the preview, you can check the Offset Path as you modify it).
Offset Path is applied on the text and it is engrailed. (Keep the path selected.)
Please check the difference of bold between the characters of Step05 and Step 06. You can see the character became bold equal as 5px which we set. This is the effect of the offset of the pass.
Lastly, we will change the color of the engrail.
Leaving the condition the pass was selected, click the color picker and choose certain color. Please set your favorite color. The selected color here will be the color of the engrail.
The color has been applied to the engrail.
That’s all for how to engrail text. Wasn’t that easy?
You can apply different Offset Path in [Offset Path Setting]. Check various Offset effect in the preview.
