Creating a pastel-colored frame in Illustrator

Creating a pastel-colored frame in IllustratorIn this section you will learn how to create a cute frame in Illustrator.

You can put any text or illustration you like, you can place your child or pet photos in Photoshop, or can be used for a background and decollation.

It is very simple to make by using the “oval tool”, instead of the complicated pen tool. Let’s see how you can do it.

Step01 Create a precise circle

Create a precise circle with the setting shown above. You will determine the color later, select any color for the moment.

Step02 Create more circles exterior

Create 4 more circles.

As shown above, set the value with [Path -> Path Offset] and create a circle exterior the original circle. Duplicate this 3 more times and make 4 circles in total exterior.

It is quite bland but it will transform into a cute frame.

Step03 Create a lumpy circle

Make the border of the circles lumpy.

Set the colors for fill and line. Select the circle in the middle and set the line of the line panel and dashed line as shown above so that the exterior line turns lumpy.

This is only one step but it’s already cuter than the original.

Step04 Make the circle line dotted

Change the lines of the 3 circles into dotted lines.

Unlike Step03, we only modify the exterior lines this time. Set it as no fill, with line. Set the line panel line and dashed line from interior as shown above and make dotted circles.

The frame is getting cuter, isn’t it?

Step05 Make the exterior lumpy

Make the exterior lumpy like you saw in Step03.

Set the outmost circle as shown above. Assign colors for both fill and line. This is already a cute frame but a little more trick will help even better.

Step06 Create small dotted lines

Copy and paste to decollate dots on the exterior frame.

Select the outmost one in Step05. Press [Ctrl+C]->[Ctrl+F] and paste it on the front of the outmost one.

Once pasted, select the thickness of the line panel line and create small dots inside the lumpy frame. No fill, with line like in Step04.

Step07 Final touch

*The image above is outlined so that it is easy to see the state of the paths.

We created lumpy circles and dotted lines using dashed line, however, the paths are still precise circles. We will outline the paths.

Click [Object -> Path-> Path Outline] and you will get a path as shown left in the image above. The 3 in the middle are dotted paths as you can see. Yet, the middle and the exterior are combination of a precise circle and dots, you need to combine them together.

Select the interior (the top of the layer shown above) and click Union in Pathfinder. Now the dotted line and the precise circles are combined and you get a lumpy circles as shown above. Please do the same with the exterior.

Complete

Now the frame is completed. How was it? This is easier than it looks.

We have created a very cute dotted frame using only “oval tool” and “dashed line”.

I also included the color codes used in this tutorial. Please make more cute frames with various colors and dots.
