Glowing bamboo forest design in Illustrator CS5

In this section you will learn about glowing bamboo forest design.

This is a very mysterious design of glowing bamboo forest in the dark. This mysterious light is expressed with [overlay] and [color burn].

This is a so-called overlay layer effect. With this tutorial, you will find this overlay effect the design.

Step01 Create 2 rectangles

Create 2 rectangles which become the bases.

Create a rectangle to fill up the art board using the rectangle tool. Fill it with yellow green (#8CC63F) without lining. Copy the created rectangle by Ctrl+C and paste it on the top by Ctrl+F.

Now you have 2 same-size same-color rectangles.

Step02 Open Swatch Library

Select a bamboo from Swatch Library.

Select the rectangle on the top. Click [Swatch Panel (Window -> Swatch) -> open Swatch Library -> Pattern -> Nature -> Nature_Plant]

Step03 Select bamboo

Nature_Plant panel opens. Click bamboo. The rectangle fill is applied to the bamboos!

Step04 Enlarge the bamboo pattern

This is already okay as it is, but let’s try enlarging the bamboos.Keep selecting the rectangle and click [Object -> Transform -> Size]

Step05 Size dialog box

[Size dialog box] appears, put numerals as shown in the dialog above, only check on the pattern.

(You can see the enlarged bamboos by checking preview. You can adjust the numerals as you like by looking at the preview.)

Step06 The patters is enlarged!

The bamboo size only is enlarged and the size of the rectangle remains the same!

Step07 Apply overlay

Apply overlay on the rectangle which the bamboo pattern is applied.

Keep selecting the rectangle and click [Clear Panel (Window -> Clear) -> Overlay].

Step08 Overlay applied

Overlay is applied on the bamboo pattern rectangle.

[Overlay] is an effect to take on different approach with [multiplication] and [screen]. The background color remains the same and the highlighted part is bright and the shadow part it dark. You will get an effect as shown above.

Step09 Create another rectangle and apply gradation

Create another rectangle with the rectangle tool over the one with overlay.Apply black and white gradation on the top rectangle as shown above.

Step10 Apply color burn

Apply “color burn” on the rectangle with gradation.

Select the rectangle with gradation. Select [Clear Panel (Window -> Clear) -> Color Burn]. Make the opacity 95%.

Step11 Color burn is applied

“Color burn” is applied on the rectangle with gradation. where the background colors are darkened based on the foreground colors.

Done!
