How to create a decorative frame using Illustrator

In this section you will learn how to create a decorative frame in an easy way using Illustrator. A decorative frame is a difficult design to create on your own.

This time, we will introduce you how to create a decorative from without the pen tool for beginners. Illustrator has a convenient feature.

Step01 Draw lines of decorative from in Illustrator

Draw rough lines of a decorative frame using the “pencil tool”. Ignore some bumps, imagine and draw a frame you would like to create.

You might be worried whether the bumpy drawing will make a decorative model but you will get there.

Step02 Path selection

When you are done drawing the left and bottom parts of the frame, click the layer of the path or select the path directly (Ctrl + Click) for smoother lines.

Click the [Smooth Tool] and select the bottommost path.

Step03 Smoothen frame line

Drag over the path selected in Step02 with the [Smooth Tool] for smoother lines.

If the lined do not get smoothened with one attempt, try multiple times for smoother results. For bumpy shapes, adjust them with the [Direct Selection Tool].

Step04 Enlarged view

They are enlarged images of before and after effect of the [Smooth Tool].

The lines are slightly smoother. From this on, we will duplicate Step03 for smoother lines. We will select a path at a time and adjust them together.

Step05 Adjustment progress

The horizontal lines are adjusted. This is still a half of the whole but you can see it is getting more like a decorative frame.

Do the same with the horizontal lines.

Step06 Adjustment completed for the horizontal and vertical lines

The bumpy lines are all smoothened now.

The original rough lines transformed into smooth lines. You are almost there to have a beautiful frame.

Step07 Change the thickness of the frame

Select all the paths and change the thickness to 2pt. Outline the paths [Object -> Path -> Outline Path].

Then adjust the placements of the paths. They may look placed nicely but could be organized badly when you look closer. Enlarge and adjust the lines together.

This looks more of a frame than Step07 with thicker lines.

Step08 Put round decorations on the tips of the lines

Now, we will put round decoration on the tips of the lines. While pressing the shift key, create about 4 precise circles to fit in the frame using the [Oval Tool]. Copy and paste the circles with <Alt + Drag>, place them on the frame.

When you are done placing, adjust the size of the circles in accordance to the frame.

Enlarge and make sure the lines and circles are stuck together. If not, adjust the places. The sizes and the placements of the circles give different impressions. Adjust them while balancing with the whole picture.

Step09 Unionize the paths

Confirm all the lines and the circles are stuck together, then unionize them as shown above [Pathfinder -> Union]

Now the decorative frame in completed.

 Done

Lastly, place the frame on right top [Copy -> Rotate180° -> Minimize]

How was it? I think it was an easy job.

This time, we created a simple decorative frame without using the [Pen Tool]. I believe it was fairly easier for those who are not good at drawing with paths or who have never created a frame on their own.

This is a simple method but you can make more beautiful frames with different approaches. Try and explore.
