In this section we will introduce you how to create original patterns in Photoshop.
You can apply the patterns for various things such as backgrounds and textures.
There are complicated patterns too but this time we will create a simple polka dot pattern.
Create a new file with the preferences shown above. This time we set the size 200pixel×200pixel. Change the size depending on the pattern you create.
Display rulers to use a guide.
To display rulers at the top and left, check [View -> Ruler]
Display guide to create a middle point. Place a cursor on the left ruler as shown above, drag when an arrow appears. It stops automatically when dragging. Do the same with the vertical guide.
Draw a circle using the “Ellipse Tool” place the middle point of the circle on the middle point of the guide.
We would like to use only the circle (dot) in the pattern. Turn off the background by clicking the eye icon of the background layer.

You cannot use the circle created by shape as it is for a pattern. Convert the image [Layer -> Rasterize -> Shape].
Save the image as a pattern. [Edit -> Define Pattern] Now you have saved the circle as a pattern image.
You get this image when you fill a 800x600px document.
We did not save a background this time, you can change the background color or overlap other patterns or images.
We created a simple dot pattern as our focus for this lesson was to show you how to save a pattern image. You can be creative by using different images, colors, and placements.
Complicated patterns are hard, start off by simple patterns like this.
